The foil is the key here. The air fryer quickly cooks the outside of the pie, but it takes a while for the interior to reach the magic 165F mark. The foil prevents the crust from burning. Remove the foil ten minutes before serving and the edges will crisp and brown up nicely.
Here’s the finished product:
Do be aware it can be tricky getting the final cooked pie out of the air fryer; I recommend investing in some heat resistant cooking gloves if you’re going to using your fryer a lot. Check out these gloves over on Amazon for less than twenty bucks. They may manipulating items in the fryer a little more simple and safe. Do you take it out of the round thing it comes in too lol
If memory serves I left it in, otherwise I imagine it would just collapse at some point 🙂 I think the interior tray is designed to cook at that temperature in the oven, so its fine here too (the air fryer is a small oven after all). That said I would not leave this unattended. Obviously all air fryers are different and cooking via an air fryer is not detailed on the product packaging. I would use extreme care, caution and attention for obvious reasons!
Do you still need to slice vent holes in the top when using the air fryer?
Thank you for your reply
This air fryer recipe works. I used the Power AirFryer XL 5.3 quart. I cooked the pie in its own cup/tray.
I use the time stated on the box for microwave Ann have been doing it this way for years and have had no problems .
I followed your exact instructions and my pie was just right.
Thanks for letting us know JoAnn! 🙂
The bottom stays doughy.
