Personally, I’ve had the best results using the air fryer to prepare these frozen egg rolls from Tai Pei. That said, I’m still not super happy with the results. They’re vastly superior to the microwave (which results in a soggy mush) and better than the oven – but – they’re still somewhat mushy.

In this recipe I’ve cooked for 10 minutes total and as you can see, some blackening/burning is starting to occur on the exterior shell; the interior though still has some sogginess apparent. I might try going to 12 minutes to see if things are improved, but I worry about excessive burning going much further.

  1. I made these in my Power Air Fryer XL Pro tonight. They were great with just a few small tweaks. First, make sure you preheat the air fryer to 400. I did it for about 4 minutes. Next, put your egg rolls in the basket and spray a little Pam Cooking Spray on them. Cook for 4 minute then, instead of shaking the basket, use tongs to turn them completely over. Spray a little more cooking spray and cook them another 4-6 minutes (I did 6). It will depend on the fryer but they ended up nice and crispy, not burned, hot throughout, and not soggy at all. You only need a tiny bit of cooking spray but that, plus the preheating are key to krispy!

  2. I start my egg rolls in the microwave for one minute and 15 seconds….get them started then to air fryer for about 10 minutes….no burnt shells but nice crispy egg rolls.

    1. Thanks Eldon, that’s a great hack. I try to write the recipes here from the perspective of, “what if I only had an air fryer to use”. But you’re absolutely correct, so many frozen products work so much better when defrosted in the microwave, then crisp finished in the fryer.

    1. Hi Sharon, I haven’t cooked those so I am not sure. I can’t imagine they’d differ too much. The main cooking time here is to crisp the egg roll wrapper, than the interior itself. That said, I would always recommend using a kitchen thermometer when experimenting!
