How to make pigs in blankets using an airfryer

For US readers, the following guide to making pigs in blankets using an air fryer applies – believe it or not, the dish is completely different in the (UK) see below).

  1. Preheat air fryer to 400F
  2. Cook prepared PIBs for six minutes
  3. Cook for an optional 30-60 seconds in the air fryer if neccessary

We used the COSORI to air fry this (affiliate link, we get a fee), always check your food with a good kitchen thermometer.

This recipe is really just a simple extension of the recipe for cooking crescent rolls in an air fryer here. Rather than use smaller/mini hot dogs, I like to take larger dogs and then wrap them in a couple of pieces of crescent dough; then slicing up the finished product.

The caveat to all of this (item three in the cooking list) is that the hot dog doesn’t reach the magic 165F mark – it will warm through but not be sizzling hot; if you’re concerned about the food temp a few extra seconds in the microwave is enough to take it well over 165F.

UK style pigs in blankets actually wrap bacon around your choice of sausage. In my opinion this is far superior! In the above picture you’ll see a Nathan’s Jumbo Beef Frank wrapped with some Kroger thick cut bacon. The thick cut bacon is a little awkward to wrap around the hot dog, so I love to skewer each end with a toothpick. By the time the dish is finished the bacon will adhere naturally to the sausage.

Note: a traditional UK PIB would use a UK style sausage – think a little smaller than a bratwurst. The coarser texture of these might need a little more cooking.

Please ensure your food is always thoroughly cooked. We recommend investing in a reliable kitchen thermometer. Check out the affordable selection on Amazon - there's something at every price point.
